Wine list

Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge.

This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies.)

Long Meadow Ranch, 2013 Rutherford Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 12.9 percent alcohol, $20. The perfect commingling of a New Zealand and California-styled sauvignon blanc. Sun-kissed fruit flavors with zesty spice. Grassy, with notes of lemon, lime and a hint of jalapeño in the mix.

MacMurray Ranch, 2012 Russian River Valley, Sonoma County Pinot Noir, 14.2 percent, $31. This pinot has crisp acid and bright red fruit – a lovely blend of raspberry, cherry and currant. It has a round texture and a sassy finish.

Stemmler, 2012 Carneros Pinot Noir, 14.1 percent, $44. This bright pinot has aromas and flavors of Bing cherry, cranberry, mineral and mushroom. It's medium-bodied with sweet oak in the mix of flavors. Nice length.

Three Sticks, 2012 Sonoma Mountain “One Sky” Chardonnay, 14.8 percent, $50. This is a chardonnay lover's chardonnay. This tropical chardonnay is full-bodied with notes of pear, apple, lemon and crème brulee. Toasty finish.

Goldeneye, 2011 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, 14.5 percent, $55. This tangy pinot is lovely. It's earthy, with notes of forest floor, but pops with Bing cherry and bright acid. Crisp finish. Has some nice intensity.
