SANTA ROSA: Is your garden bugged?
Clint Eastwood, move over. When it comes to vanquishing the bad guys in the garden, a scientist and not a gunslinger is your best defense. On July 17, Baldo Villegas, a retired senior environmental scientist with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, will present “The Good, the Bad and Bugly,” before the Redwood Empire Rose Society.
Villegas helped implement biological control programs to deal with invasive insects and pests in California.
The meeting, open to the public, opens at 7 p.m. at the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Ave., with refreshments followed by the talk at 7:30 p.m.
The society is also offering two free rose-pruning demonstrations for both members and non-members from 9 a.m. to noon July 12 and 19. Barbara Ellis, a consulting rosarian with the American Rose Society, will show how to prune roses mid-year for shape and vigor. Participants should bring pruning sheers.
